San Antonio Spurs to Launch Selena Merch Line Honoring Fallen Singer

In the hunt for a Western Conference playoff spot, the San Antonio Spurs could use all the good vibes that they can come by to keep their amazing postseason streak going. Come next week, they might receive a boost through the online presale release of a unisex T-shirt and a tumbler that pay tribute to Tejano music superstar Selena. The items will serve as precursors to a 20-piece merch collection that the NBA team will unveil in April.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the murder of the burgeoning singing sensation, and even though that unfortunate anniversary is not stated as a reason for the merch line’s existence, it is fitting that the Spurs would seek to honor someone with such a connection to the team’s home city. Their April 3 tilt against the Golden State Warriors will enable fans to purchase the cross-branded products as part of the league’s initial Selena Night, which figures to be extra jubilant thanks to the 1,500 ticket and T-shirt packages that the team will have sold.

According to the San Antonio Express-News, men’s and women’s clothing (what, no love for the next generation of Selena fans?), caps and other cross-branded selections will comprise the collection, and 18 of the goods will remain off limits until early April. Feb. 5 will mark the commencement for the aforementioned T-shirt and drinkware item.

The full collection combines to further the enduring presence that Selena, who was just 23 upon her March 31, 1995 death, has commanded in the promo world. One expects that as the year unfolds, fans of the fallen figure and the Spurs will make the merch tribute a success and that next year, which would have seen the star turn 50, will see even more means to acknowledge her popularity and influence.
